Sonderborg´s House of Science learning project
Sonderborg has strong traditions for being in the forefront regarding learning, education & competencies. Not many cities of this size have same variety of educations and schools. In Sonderborg you can study from Kindergarten to PhD. Sonderborg also ranks among the highest populated areas in Denmark for (university) engineers.
To stay in the forefront with high qualified engineers and scientists, the House of Science project was created in 2008 by Sonderborg Municipality, ProjectZero, Danfoss Universe and the four local high schools/colleges: AGS, Business College Syd, EUC Syd, Staatsskolen.
During 2009 and 2010 science teachers in the Municipality´s 21 schools were introduced to modern science and new learning methods. This initiative was implemented by high-school students, who became science coaches/ teachers for school kids. During 2010 a new science/nature concept was successfully tested in 8 Kindergartens.
1000 kids challenged by renewable technology and solutions
In September 2010 almost 1000 kids/students took part in a competition where they were challenged on renewable energy by building the most efficient wind-turbine or solar powered electrical car. The challenge showed a lot of interest, commitment and young people acquired new future-proof competencies – to become responsible citizens for the society of tomorrow.
The ESA project (European Sustainability Ambassadors) has been integrated in the House of Science program and the new vision is now to create 15.000 climate ambassadors using the ESA´s 3-step approach.
Climate, Sustainability and Innovation as science learning drivers
During 2011 the House of Science scope had its main focus on Climate, Sustainability and Innovation in order to secure a bigger impact and harvest synergies with other ProjectZero´s business participation programs. The ambition is now to create a strong green line from KG to PhD.
Danfoss Universe plays an important role in building the new learning competences for both teachers and kids.
